Paralegals can voluntarily obtain certification by taking the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (“NFPA”) exams or National Association of Legal Assistants (“NALA”) exams. Rhode Island is a NFPA member association. There are, however, some states that do require some type of regulation for paralegals and can be viewed at the state-by-state regulation link on the NFPA website: http://paralegals.org/default.asp?page=30 Some law offices encourage their paralegals to take this voluntary certification exam for practicing paralegals and allow the use of “RP®” to be used on letterhead and business cards. For those who are interested in obtaining presentation information to “pitch” to your offices, please let me know and I will be happy to provide you a PowerPoint presentation. Currently, there are two (2) certification exams administered by NFPA through Prometric Test Centers: Paralegal CORE Competency Exam (“PCCE”) and Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (“PACE”). Both exams are computer-generated exams and are comprised of multiple choice questions. There are no essays for either exam. The criteria and other information relating to each exam are contained in the chart at the end of this article. Both exams are based on the Federal Rules of Procedure. There are not any state-specific exams offered at this time by NFPA. Those who successfully complete either exam are listed by state on the NFPA website. If you are interested in participating in a study group to prepare for a certification exam, please send an email to Pat Lyons, RP® at [email protected]. For more information:
